SINCE 1912
Zion Lutheran Church in Ashippun was established in 1912 and was located in a historic brick building until 1989 when the congregation broke ground on the new building we are in today. Efforts were made by longtime members to preserve the history of the original church within the new building. Today Zion's sanctuary is home to the original altar, the classrooms bear the names of our founding families, and the fellowship hallway is lined with photos of past confirmation classes. Times have changed for our little church but God has been faithful to our little congregation and there is still so much yet ahead!
Our pastor is Doug Andersen. He has been serving our congregation since January of 2019. Pastor Doug was born in Seattle and received his Bachelor's degree in Political Science from the University of Washington. Before becoming a pastor, he served in the United States Marine Corps in military intelligence and then, after leaving the military, owned and operated a private investigations business with his father. In 2001, he started feeling that God was calling him to be more active in ministry. He and his family began a process of discernment that resulted in their decision to leave Washington state and move to St. Paul, Minnesota so he could attend Luther Seminary. Pastor Doug loves teaching, preaching, and visiting with people. He leads a weekly adult bible study where we delve deeply into the scriptures for the week and look at how they can inform how we live our lives and strengthen our relationships. On Tuesdays, he holds an open coffee chat time at a local coffee shop where we can just drop in and chat about anything. He likes to remind us that God is everywhere and present in everything we do and that we are all beloved children of God.
Zion Lutheran is a part of the ELCA and a member of the Greater Milwaukee Synod.
We believe in reaching out to the community and helping those in need as a vital part of the Christian life. Zion provides opportunities to attendees to participate in worship, education classes, and fellowship, while learning more about God's word and His call for us to be the hands and feet of Jesus to those in our community and the world. We are active supporters of our local food pantry, sponsors to friends far away, and volunteers in service in the community.
Every year on the 1st Sunday in October, Zion hosts Oktoberfest complete with a band and food. We celebrate our German heritage with music and the polka!
Zion's community loves to host events and learn new things. Every two months or so we host a community night and invite others to attend to learn a craft and gather together. For more details see the events page!
Every couple of months Zion hosts gatherings with a theme. The Friendship Breakfasts are a time to fellowship and be a little silly. But really who needs an excuse to get together with friends?
We are a part of a two point Parish with Cross Lutheran Church in Ixonia and we share our worship space with Holy Name of Jesus which is a Evangelical Catholic Church.
